Oh, crap. The sun might blow up.
That was pretty much the point of an article I just read. However, I find it hard to get excited over the news. These bits and pieces of information talking about things prepared to explode or blow up or violently obliterate themselves within our lifetime have come up so often that it’s sort-of like the “boy who cried wolf.” Okay, so the sun may or may not blow up in our lifetime. Sure, it’s not due for another 50,000 years, but that might be wrong. At least according to what I read. Oh, and Yellowstone is actually a giant volcano that’s due to explode in our lifetime and cover the entire west coast with six inches of ash. And you know the giant earthquake disaster of 1906? Yeah, we’re due to have another one of those too. Not to mention rising sea levels. If you’re religious, add the apocalypse to that list.
But those haven’t happened yet. Just like how the world didn’t spontaneously combust in 2000. It probably won’t blow up in 2013 either. Of course, there’s always the possibility that I’m just choosing not to believe all this stuff because if I did, then I’d be constantly running around like a chicken with my head cut off screaming “We’re all gonna die!” And of course we’re all going to die at some point since we aren’t immortal, but I’d rather not live in fear of a volcano that’s a couple hundred or thousand miles away.
However… I do understand the frenzy about global warming. The rest we can’t control, whether we want to or not, but we can actually do something about our ozone. Even if we stopped all green-house gas emissions today, it wouldn’t have any affect until eighty years later. Which, in my mind, just means that we should start immediately so that the Earth heals sooner. But what did we do?
We had a giant oil spill that’s seriously endangering wildlife.
Is it just me, or are humans stupid?
Of course, I’m just as guilty as the next person, and I’ll be the first to admit it. But I wish that we’d focus on what we can do to avert disaster instead of worry about things that we’re hopeless against. What’s wrong with being optimistic? The world keeps going: Oh no! We’re going to die because of *insert natural disaster that we’re powerless against!* …We need to go to war with *insert country of your choice.* We’ll deal with global warming later.
See why I’m ticked off? There are things we can do, and instead we’re worrying about the lack of sunspots on the sun! Seriously? Seriously?! WHY AREN’T WE DOING SOMETHING?!
Okay, sorry. Done with the rant now. Let’s see… this week I made chocolate cupcakes and utterly failed at red velvet cupcakes. I practiced flute and piano, and learned some of Dango Daikazoku on the piano. Despite the fact that it’s summer and I have access to the pool daily thanks to my sister and step-brother’s twice-daily swim practice, I haven’t gone in the water once. I just don’t really feel like swimming. I wonder why. I read A Company of Swans from the library, and got some sandals. And I watched The Young Victoria, which is my favorite movie now. Beyond that… I haven’t really done anything. Sigh. I really should do something worthwhile. Oh! And I updated my blog lots and lots because as Sa. pointed out, a post every Wednesday should be my minimum, not my maximum. I’m finding it rather odd that when I tell myself I need to write, my writing is worse. I’ll outgrow it though, I suppose. I hope everyone’s having a nice week!
