Just Peter and Petra.
That’s who we were, before we came to Neverland. You might have heard of Peter Pan? Yeah, he’s my brother. Pan’s not his last name, but he always liked the idea of fame, and he said that was more likely if his first and last names were alliterative.
Well, he got the fame, alliterative names notwithstanding. I might not agree with the means he used to get it, but since when did he listen to me? Sure, just go ahead and kidnap some little kids and put them in harm’s way, why don’t you… he could have avoided Captain Hook, if he’d ever bothered to be careful. But he was too busy having an adventure to worry about something like safety.
Then again, that’s kind of his whole shtick. “Faith, trust, and fairy dust!” There’s no fine print about losing your life, or your heart, or your mind… but what did you expect from the boy who will never grow up? He never realized that Wendy truly cared about him. He never thought about what it would do to the boys, to know that Neverland was right there, but that they could never go back.
That’s where I come in. I’m Petra the Weaver, because I’m always the one wrapping up and tying off the loose ends that Peter dumps in my lap.
I know, my name’s not alliterative. Get over it.
Where he trades in fairy dust, I trade in love. I make sure that everyone lands safely and softly on their feet when they return to the real world, because Neverland can do a real number on someone if they aren’t properly looked after. I’m talking depression, asylums, the whole shebang. The real world is an unforgiving place.
But if you give people love… love for themselves, love for hobbies, for pets, for other people, then it helps them to get through it. It works a lot like fairy dust, after all, so it’s a good substitute. It makes the real world look more beautiful, and softer, and more forgiving.
It can even help people to fly, if they let it.
