Day 11: Parade of Things

An owl flies by, carrying a little box in its talons. Then a rabbit hops past you with something that looks suspiciously like- is that a backpack? Then a hedgehog goes past with a box of its own. You flag it down, curious about the strange parade of woodland creatures that’s interrupted your inbox, and you recognize the hedgehog from before.

“Mara is doing Moving Tasks today!” it tells you in an officious squeak. “Going through all her things! We’re helping!”

You pause at this. Wasn’t Mara writing a novel?

“Yes, but she needed to vanquish the dragon that was nesting in Mount Storage Locker.” The rabbit hops over. “It took longer than she thought-“

“Five hours of sorting!” the hedgehog says, lifting its small box as if to offer you proof. It appears to be filled with tiny spoons.

“-but she got it done. She’ll be back to storytelling tomorrow.”

The owl, which has already deposited its box elsewhere, swoops overhead and hoots at the other two.

“Coming, coming.” The rabbit heads off, its backpack bouncing as it goes.

“More anon!” the hedgehog squeaks, waving a little paw at you before picking up its box and disappearing into the ether.

You stand there for a few more minutes and see a toad, a squirrel, and a raccoon go by with an odd assortment of goods — including a stack of linen dish towels, a small perfume bottle, and a bundle of wooden chopsticks.

When the owl passes by with another box in its talons, you wave and set off for your next email. Seems busy here. Best to head out before one of these critters grows wise and hands you a box to carry.
