The Forest On Fire

I still remember the stories that I heard about the Forest On Fire. How it housed witches and goblins and dragons and basilisks and plenty of other creatures. I heard how, whenever the leaves fell from the trees, they would burst into flame. But that begs the question of how the leaves on the ground got there, supposing they were incinerated in midair.

I never really meant to go in search of the Forest On Fire. But when you’re a knight for hire, well, you can get yourself into some interesting situations. And apparently there’s someone who’ll grant wishes living in this forest. Yup, classic knight-for-hire go-in-search-of-a-magical-thing-and-bring-it-back story. Or, well, it would be classic if I was the third son in my family and all my older brothers had also tried the quest and Failed Miserably.

I’m actually the second daughter, which throws a bit of a wrench in things. And I wasn’t given this quest by a king or a wizard, but by my next-door neighbor. He heard that I was a knight, and he needs a wish granted, so… here I am.

What I’m really wondering, though, is how you bring an un-granted wish back to someone. When I find this wish-granting person (or dragon, or witch, or whatever it is), am I just supposed to say “Now that you’ve agreed to grant my wish, I wish that you’ll give me a different wish to take back to my neighbor, because technically I’m on a quest and that’s just what you do?”

…Hmm. I’m not quite sure what I think about that. But first I need to find this wish-granting person-thing in this giant forest, while somehow avoiding all the other non-wish-granting creatures that may (or may not) bite my head off. Oh, and I need to avoid the leaves that may (or may not) burst into flame in midair. Right.

Well. At least I won’t be bored.

  1. This story makes me want to go on a quest <3
Not quite sure what I'd be questing for, but I'm sure I'd find something.

    1. I’m sure you would! We should all go on a quest sometime, just for the heck of it. 🙂
