End in Sight

·

Oh my god. Ack. Ok. Where do I begin?

Well. Let’s start with the fact that my word count is currently 83,600 words. Given that a fantasy debut novel shouldn’t be more than 100,000 words, I only have 16,000 words left to wrap this up. With eleven plot points left and a denouement to tackle (which I did NOT plot, because that’s next week’s problem), that’s an average of a 1,000 words per plot point to get this all done in time.

I’m doing NaNoWriMo. Did I mention this? No? Well I’m doing NaNo, with a goal of finishing the first draft of this novel and writing a short story that I’ll be using for workshop submissions later in the year. So it’s not a super-official NaNo, but I feel like people are more accepting of this now than they used to be.

But. The important thing about NaNo is the word count: 1,667 words a day, minimum, for a total of 50,000 at the end of the month. I’ve been aiming for 2,000 a day, and if I keep hitting that…

(Hang on. I need a second to do the math. Remember, I went to art school, where math is another name for the devil.)

IF MY DRAFT IS 100,000 WORDS OR LESS, THEN I WILL FINISH IT IN EIGHT DAYS.

I can’t. I mean. WHAT?

I don’t think I really believe that it’ll happen. Everything I said in my last post about being afraid of facing the book’s flaws once I’m done holds true, but I’m still writing. (I took a break for a little while, but luckily NaNo arrived to kick my butt back into gear.) And I mean, I keep hitting the plot points, so… it would stand to reason that I can’t keep writing this book until the end of time. Logically. But I’ve been talking about writing a novel forever… at least since middle school, maybe even before that. Could I really do it, finally, just a little over a week from now?

It’s crazy. Completely insane. I don’t know what to do with myself. (Clearly.)

When I finish it, I’ll report back!

*runs away screaming*
